Robin, Connect support

Robin from Shepley generously gives his time to support the health and wellbeing of his community through the NHS and Care Volunteer Responders programme.

"Following retirement, I was eager to put my time to good use and spend it helping others. Volunteering became the perfect platform to do so. The programme is highly adaptable, allowing me to commit as little or as much time as I want while balancing other commitments. This flexibility accommodates my lifestyle and can be a great option for those who may struggle with regular commitments.

"The experience is very rewarding. Coming from a very diverse family, I have loved interacting with people of all ages and backgrounds. I always knew that I wanted to make a difference in the lives of others, and hopefully, I am doing that through volunteering.’’

Robin was one of the first volunteers to take part in Connect, a volunteer activity to support people with social activities, hobbies and interests, helping reduce loneliness and improving the mental wellbeing of the person receiving support. Robin recently accepted a task to support a local gentleman with mild learning difficulties and mobility issues, who lives alone without any family nearby.

"Originally, I was going to accompany him with shopping, but as his benefits were a week away, he wasn’t able to do a full shop. Instead, I suggested we go out for a coffee and a chat. He was very happy to do that. We went to a local cafe for tea and cake, which he thoroughly enjoyed. It was not something he does very often, if at all, so it was a nice treat for him.

"Our conversation ranged from health and family to heritage and decorating. Spending 90 minutes together, we both enjoyed the outing. Living alone, without any family nearby he mentioned life can get lonely, sharing his gratitude for the meet-up. The encounter was a reminder that a small gesture can have a big impact.

"I would highly recommend volunteering to others who are looking to make a difference."
